$47 Million Awarded To Parents For Child's Scalp Disfigurement

The parents of a child whose scalp and head were seriously disfigured due to a doctors actions have been awarded $47 million by a 12-person jury.

ACE Bandage Wrap Causes Permanent Damage

When the child of the plaintiffs was born, she presented with subgaleal hemorrhage a rare but potentially lethal condition that must be treated quickly. There are several accepted forms of treatment in the USA but none of them include wrapping the child's head with an ACE bandage.

That, however, is exactly what the child's doctor did. He wrapped her head with an ACE bandage - tightly. Today, she has extreme disfigurement and is unable to grow hair because of his treatment. Doctors believe she will require extensive reconstruction surgery over the next few years.

Her parents sued the doctor and hospital, alleging that he did not provide her with the accepted standard of care and that the technique he used was learned in the Philippines, not the USA. After a lengthy trial the jury agreed with them and awarded them $47 million for her ongoing care and suffering.
